Yuri, a 12-year-old Amur tiger, has died, according to Denver Zoo officials.
š§µIt is with great sadness that we share the passing of our 12-year-old Amur tiger, Yuri. In October, Yuri’s health declined significantly, and a recent exam revealed he was experiencing anemia, dehydration, and systemic inflammation. pic.twitter.com/ZV7UO13zZB

Yuriās health had been in decline over the past three years, zoo officials said.
āGiven this decline in addition to his chronically managed health conditions, Yuriās care team was concerned about his prognosis and quality of life and made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him and prevent any further suffering,ā the Denver Zoo wrote on Twitter.
Born at the Erie Zoo in Pennsylvania in 2010, the 435-pound tiger was introduced at the Denver Zoo in March 2019. In October 2021, Yuri tested positive for COVID-19.
The loss was hard on zoo staffers, especially those who cared for Yuri over the years, zoo officials said, and some shared recollections of Yuri in a tribute to the tiger.
āYuri was one of the most magnificent animals I ever worked with,ā a staffer said. āHis paws were like dinner plates, and his teeth were 4ā³ daggers, but his sweet chuff was enough to melt your heart.ā
