A fire under an Interstate 70 overpass forced authorities to shut down the westbound lanes at Wadsworth Boulevard in Arvada Sunday afternoon, according to Arvada police.

The fire was reported at 2:19 p.m. under the bridge at Clear Creek, according to police and Arvada Fire. Firefighters put the blaze out quickly but it still burned an about 20 foot by 50 foot area, the fire department said in a statement.

The westbound lanes were shut down around 3 p.m. and westbound traffic must exit at Wadsworth Boulevard, which is Exit 269A.

The bridge will be inspected for structural integrity before the interstate is reopened, police said. It was not immediately clear how long that would take.

No one was hurt in the fire, which Arvada Fire said “appears to have started by open burning.”
