Von Miller won a Super Bowl with the Los Angeles Rams in February and will be suiting up for Buffalo this fall, but his heart is still in Denver.
The former Broncos outside linebacker, speaking at his Von’s Vision charity event Monday evening at Dove Valley, didn’t refrain from referring to the team as “we” while sizing up Denver’s chances with new quarterback Russell Wilson.
“This team is going to be great,” Miller said. “It’s bittersweet that I won’t be here to be a part of it, because I’ve still got orange and blue in my heart and it will stay that way forever.
“We’ve been close in the AFC West for a very long time, and now we’ve got Russell Wilson, Jerry Jeudy’s going to be insane this year, Courtland Sutton’s going to be insane this year. I want those guys to win as many games as possible.”
Miller signed a six-year, $120 million deal with the Bills this offseason, with less than half that money guaranteed. On Monday, the 33-year-old detailed the conflicting feelings he had entering free agency.
“Free agency comes, and (I) want to be a Ram, want to be a Buffalo Bill, (I) want to go back to the Denver Broncos, (I) love the Dallas Cowboys,” Miller said. “Everything just happened so fast, (I) go with the Bills… and I start thinking about the type of the wonderful things I can do with this team.”
Buffalo’s made three consecutive playoff appearances under head coach Sean McDermott and quarterback Josh Allen, and is among the favorites to win a Super Bowl this coming season. Should Miller be fortunate enough to win a ring in Buffalo, he’d become the first to play in, and win, a Super Bowl with three different teams.
Miller acknowledged the Rams’ run to the championship last year helped him process his deadline trade, in which Broncos’ general manager George Paton send the veteran to Los Angeles in exchange for second- and third-round picks in this year’s draft. With those picks, Paton selected edge rusher Nik Bonitto at No. 64 overall and traded the third-round selection to the Colts.
“It was heartbreaking,” Miller recalled. “I almost cried (leaving the facility the day of the trade). To go and win a Super Bowl with the Rams, that is the only thing that could’ve helped out with the heartbreak.”
As Miller looks to add to his legacy on the field, he’s also focused on enhancing his legacy off of it. Von’s Vision, now in its 10th year, provides eye exams and eyewear for kids in need. Miller started it with the idea of “helping out one or two kids.” The foundation has far outgrown that.
“Von’s Vision has really grown legs of its own — it’s walking, it’s talking, it’s crawling around,” Miller said. “Hopefully in 30 years, it’ll be talking to me, taking care of kids on its own (as a big charity)… To help over 8,000 kids and raise over $4 million for glasses and eyewear and eye exams (since 2012), it’s definitely a true blessing.”
