Tsitsipas defeats Khachanov, sets up Djokovic showdown


Pre-tournament favourite Novak Djokovic advanced to his tenth Australian Open final after a straight sets win over America’s Tommy Paul. The nine-time champion extended his record of never losing an Australian Open semifinal by defeating Paul 7-5 6-1 6-2 in the first-ever meeting between the pair. The fourth seed will now look to extend his unbeaten record in the finals of the Australian Open when he faces Greek third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final on Sunday.

Tsitsipas booked his place in the final with a win over Russian 18th seed Karen Khachanov at the Rod Laver Arena. The 24-year-old needed four sets to overcome a battling Khachanov in their semifinal clash, eventually emerging with a 7-6 6-4 6-7 6-3 win in just over three hours. Tsitsipas will be playing only his second major final, having also been defeated by Djokovic in his first final at Roland Garros in 2021. The Greek star will also be aiming for his first Grand Slam title as well as the number one spot in the men’s ranking.
