Suspect in death of Weld County Sheriff’s deputy to appear in court on multiple charges

A suspect in the hit-and-run crash that killed a Weld County Sheriff’s deputy was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon, he was arrested in Fort Collins on Monday night.

Norberto Garcia-Gonzales is being held on investigation of leaving the scene of and accident involving death and careless driving resulting in death, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

On Sunday, Deputy Alexis Hein-Nutz, 24, was riding her motorcycle to work when she was allegedly hit by Garcia-Gonzales, driving a Ford van, near the intersection of AA Street and Weld County Road 37, authorities said.

Initially, after the fatal crash, the suspect was identified by another name.

Garcia-Gonzales, 36, was arrested in Fort Collins at about 10:15 p.m. Monday, according to the state patrol.
