The driver of a stolen Jeep crashed into a West Metro Fire Rescue ambulance Sunday evening in Lakewood, rolling the emergency vehicle and sending the two paramedics inside to the hospital, authorities said.
There were no patients in the ambulance at the time of the crash and the crew was headed to a non-emergency call at the time, West Metro officials said in a tweet.
The incident began around 5:40 p.m. when Lakewood police located a Jeep that had been reported stolen at West 14th Avenue and Reed Street, according to a news release from the Lakewood Police Department.
Officers approached the Jeep on foot, but the driver sped off, Lakewood police said. The officers did not pursue the Jeep, police said, but as the driver fled, they crashed into the ambulance.
Three people inside the stolen Jeep were taken into custody and hospitalized with injuries, Lakewood police said.
The Jeep theft and crash remain under investigation.
The two paramedics have since been released from the hospital and “are fine,” West Metro officials said in a tweet.
