Serena Williams suffers shock first-round exit as Swiatek makes history


Legendary player and 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams fell at the first hurdle as she made her return to tennis after a year without action. The 40-year-old returned to the same ground where she had been forced to retire with a hamstring injury in the first round 12 months ago and faced real adversity in her first match back.

Serena Williams came up against France’s Harmony Tan, who ended up winning the match 7-5 1-6 7-6 to qualify for the second round of the 2022 Wimbledon tournament.

Elsewhere, World number one Iga Swiatek cruised through to the second round of the tournament without much fuss, setting a new record along the way. The 21-year-old defeated Jana Fett 6-0 6-3 in straight sets to win her 36th consecutive match, making her the first player to achieve the feat in the 21st century.

French Open runner-up Coco Gauff had to battle from a set down to claim a 2-6 6-3 7-5 win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse in her first round match at the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. The 18-year-old had to show her grit and resilience to overcome her opponent and book her second round place.

Greek star Maria Sakkari booked her place in the second round in style after she claimed a 6-1 6-4 straight sets win over Zoe Hives in their opening match.

Veteran Wang Qiang handed out the biggest upset of the day by sending Belinda Bencic crashing out of the competition. The Chinese star claimed a 6-4 5-7 6-2 win to qualify for the second round at the expense of the 14th seeded Swiss player.

In the men’s side of the draw, second seed Rafael Nadal made light work of Francisco Cerundolo, claiming a 6-4 6-3 3-6 6-4 win in four sets to book his place in the second round.

Nick Kyrgios defeated fan favourite Paul Jubb in five sets to book his place in the second round of the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. The Australian won the match 3-6 6-1 7-5 6-7 7-5 to progress in the competition.

Sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime was stunned out of the 2022 Wimbledon tournament by Maxime Cressy. Cressy won the match 6-7 6-4 7-6 7-6 to book his place in the second round.

Fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Alexander Ritschard in four sets to book his place in the second round of the tournament at the All England Club. The Greek star claimed a 7-6 6-3 5-7 6-4 win over his Swiss opponent.

Denis Shapovalov needed five sets to defeat world number 62 Arthur Rinderknech in their first round match at the 2022 Wimbledon tournament. The Canadian won 6-1 6-7 6-7 6-4 6-1 to book his place in the second round.
