Some drag races should just never happen. And this is one of them. A Mercedes-AMG G 63 drag races a Lamborghini Gallardo, one of the fastest cars of its time. And that time was 18 years ago.
But first things first. It’s the fight of some super off-roaders we’re starting with here. So first, there is a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. It’s got a 6.4-liter V8, an eight-speed automatic transmission, 470 horsepower (477 PS), 470 lb-ft (637 Nm) and weighs 5,259 lbs (2,385 kilograms). It takes 5.9 seconds to go from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h).
One of the opponents is America’s sweetheart, the new Ford Bronco Raptor. It’s a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 powering this boxy model, with a ten-speed automatic transmission, bringing 418 horsepower (424 PS) and 440 lb-ft (597 Nm) of torque. That engine accomplishes a complicated mission. It pulls 5,731 lb (2,600 kilograms). And it only takes 4.0 seconds from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h).
The Bronco does not stand a chance. It finishes lightyears behind the Wrangler Rubicon. 80 yards, to be more precise.
Then the V8-powered SUVs take off, literally, with the G 63 performing a wheelie and taking the lead ahead of the Land Rover Defender 90 V8 and Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.
The Defender, with its 5.0-liter v8 and 518 horsepower (525 PS), falls behind right from the start, while the G 63 and the Wrangler Rubicon fight for their right on the dragway. Not for long though, because the German lets the American eat its dust. “There is a replacement for displacement and it’s turbochargers,”. the YouTuber setting up the dragrace says. And it’s also in the 577 horsepower (585 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) that it makes.
But then the Lamborghini Gallardo shows up out of nowhere, breaking the silence with its 5.0-liter V10 roar. It’s the roar of 493 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. It’s got a six-speed manual gearbox and it weighs 3,560 lbs. And it’s ready to take on the winner of the previous drag race.
Would it have better stayed at home and leave the big guys have their way? Or will it make the Mercedes-AMG G 63 cry in shame? We’re not going to spoil it for you. All we can say it’s a photo finish. Almost.
