A man suspected of a homicide in Lakewood has died from a self-inflicted gunshot, according to police.

On Wednesday Lakewood and Denver police attempted to serve an arrest warrant at an apartment in the 16300 block of East 49th Avenue in Denver, police announced Saturday. Lakewood police identified the homicide suspect as 35-year-old Oscar Gutierrez.

Officers made phone contact with Gutierrez on Wednesday and attempted to negotiate his surrender for several hours. They were unsuccessful, police said.

“When police eventually made entrance into the apartment, Gutierrez was found deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Lakewood police said.

Gutierrez was identified as a suspect in the shooting death of 36-year-old Javier Cano Castillo of Denver, according to Lakewood police.

Castillo’s body was found inside a pickup on the morning of Oct. 10 near a gas station in the 3400 block of South Wadsworth Boulevard. The homicide investigation indicates that Castillo likely was shot and killed inside the truck at that location on Oct. 7, police said.

The shooting death of Castillo remains an active investigation, police said. Denver police continue to investigate Gutierrez’s death.
