Man held in Denver shooting of teen who was in a vehicle with his mom

A 22-year-old man is being held for investigation of attempted first-degree murder for allegedly shooting a teenager who was inside a vehicle with his mother.

The shooting happened at about 3:30 p.m. Monday near East 14th Avenue and Ogden Street, in the Capitol Hill area of Denver, according to police.

Katrelle James, 22, was taken into custody on Monday night in the 1000 block of East Colfax Avenue, police said Tuesday in a 1:53 p.m. tweet.

“At this point in the investigation, it appears the motorist had to quickly stop as the suspect walked out into traffic,” police said.

After the suspect walked past the front of the vehicle, the mother continued driving eastbound on 14th Avenue. “As she drove away, she heard several gunshots directly from behind her vehicle and her son, a 13-year-old passenger, suffered a gunshot wound.”

After the shooting, the victims flagged down an officer at 14th Avenue and Downing Street, according to an arrest affidavit in the case. The boy was shot in the arm. The suspect fled.

Investigators found five spent 9mm cartridge casings and one live 9mm cartridge at the shooting scene. Three shots hit the rear of the car. Several witnesses gave investigators statements on Monday, including detailed descriptions of the suspect.

At about 7 p.m., detectives working on the case viewed a High Activity Location Observation (HALO) police camera review of the shooting, the affidavit said. Detectives then spotted a person on HALO, live, who matched the witness descriptions, and the earlier camera review, in the 1000 block of East Colfax Avenue. That’s where James was taken into custody without incident.

A gun was not recovered, according to the affidavit. James exercised his right and asked for an attorney.
