On Saturday, Jets coach Robert Saleh said he was “torn” on playing the team’s veteran players Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.
According to a source, Gang Green will sit most of their veterans during the second preseason game, which SNY first reported.
The players not expected to play against the Falcons include quarterback Joe Flacco, defensive end Carl Lawson, and wide receivers Corey Davis and Elijah Moore.
After the bone bruise and meniscus injury to quarterback Zach Wilson in the Jets’ first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, it is understandable why Saleh would be cautious about playing the team’s star players. With the season opener 20 days away, the Jets don’t want to lose another key starter for a significant period of time.
New York did receive some good news, as Wilson could miss as few as two-to-four weeks after having surgery to trim his meniscus. With a chance of Flacco starting against the Ravens Sept. 11, the Jets likely will play a lot of Mike White and Chris Streveler under center against the Falcons and during the preseason finale against the Giants.
Saleh said last week the Jets had two productive practice days against the Falcons. That likely also factored into the decision to rest the team’s starters.
Don’t expect veterans such as linebacker C.J. Mosley, cornerback Reed or right tackle George Fant to see any action Monday night either. Duane Brown, whom the Jets signed last week, could play in the preseason finale against the Giants as he is still working his way back into game shape.
Defensive lineman Quinnen Williams has been bothered by an ankle injury and will need to participate in team drills before seeing any game action. While fans might be disappointed not to see some well-known starters, Monday’s game will present an opportunity for unproven players on the roster bubble to showcase their skills.
One such player is wide receiver Denzel Mims, as he is fighting to earn a spot on the Jets’ 53-man roster. Mims will need to perform better than he did against the Eagles when he caught two passes for 25 yards but dropped a pass and was flagged for an illegal formation penalty.
