With Jim Harbaugh’s name swirling in NFL circles, count Jerry Rosburg as one who believes the Broncos would be wise to consider Michigan’s man as their new head coach.
The Broncos interim head coach lauded Harbaugh on Friday in Dove Valley, with Rosburg calling Harbaugh “a fabulous football coach.”
“I watched him as a player and I admired him greatly as a player because he’s so competitive and the fire he has just comes naturally to him because he’s been involved in football his whole life,” Rosburg said. “His father has the same fire in his belly, as does his brother John. That’s followed through with his coaching career, seeing the success he’s had at every level (of NFL and college).”
The Rosburgs and the Harbaughs are family friends — “we’re the Harburgs the Rosbaughs, that’s how close we are, depends on who’s saying it,” Rosburg quipped — and Rosburg worked for over a decade on John’s staff in Baltimore, including serving as associate head coach for his “best friend.”
While Jim Harbaugh reiterated his intention this week to remain at Michigan next season, reports have already linked him to conversations with the Panthers, and it’s logical to believe the Broncos and Colts (who also have an interim coach) could also come calling.
Bailey settled at LG. Quinn Bailey went from the practice squad to playing right tackle in Week 10 against Tennessee. That outing was rough for him and for the Broncos in general, but it helped set him up for a better performance when he stepped into the lineup midway through Sunday’s game against Kansas City for left guard Dalton Risner.
“It helps a lot because you just get used to being out there,” Bailey said. “It’s hard when you’re on (scout) team because you’re looking at cards and not getting huddle calls. So it’s nice to get in there and get huddle calls again.”
With Risner out of the finale due to an elbow injury, Bailey is set to make his first NFL start on Sunday between left tackle Cam Fleming and center Graham Glasgow.
“It’s just kind of the nature of the position,” he said. “You’ve got to be ready to fill in where you’re needed.”
Hamlin to be honored. NFL teams across the country this weekend will honor Bills safety Damar Hamlin before their Week 18 games. Hamlin’s made progress in recovering from suffering cardiac arrest on the field in Cincinnati but as of Friday afternoon remains hospitalized.
Teams have the option of painting the “3s” on their 30-yard lines in Bills colors, wearing pre-game shirts that say “Love for Damar 3,” and having their public address announcer read a statement of support for Hamlin and for first responders before the game.
Injury statuses. Tight end Eric Saubert, cornerback Damarri Mathis, outside linebacker Jonathan Kongbo, tight end Eric Tomlinson and right tackle Billy Turner are all questionable for Sunday’s season finale. Defensive lineman D.J. Jones (knee), left tackle Calvin Anderson (ankle) and receiver/returner Kendall Hinton (chest/foot) are out.
