I-70, I-76, other roads closed after snowstorm ends

Several major interstates and highways in northeast Colorado remain closed Thursday after a two-day snowstorm dropped heavy snow in some areas.

Interstate 70 is still closed in portions after a crash near Byers involving nine semitrailers and a dozen other vehicles.

The Colorado State Patrol in Limon said they were resuming cleanup efforts Thursday morning but that it would be a lengthy process as two of the trailers would need to be offloaded before they can be removed.

The CSP said on Twitter they were in the process of opening the westbound lanes of the interstate, and the eastbound lanes will reopen from Deer Trail to the Kansas border. The eastbound lanes from Airpark Road to Deer Trail will remain closed until the crash is cleared.

Many other major highways out east are still closed to the snowy conditions.

The Colorado Department of Transportation advised travelers should not attempt to use county or secondary roadways to bypass highway closures.

The following highways are closed due to adverse conditions:

Interstate 76 in both directions from Sterling to Nebraska.
U.S. 6 in both directions from Sterling to Nebraska.
U.S. 36 in both directions from Airpark Road (Mile 76) to Kansas.
U.S. 385 in both directions from Julesburg to Nebraska.
U.S. 385 in both directions from Cheyenne Wells to Wray.
U.S. 138 in both directions from Sterling to Nebraska.
Colo. 11 in both directions from CO 138 to Nebraska.
Colo. 23 in both directions from US-385 to Nebraska.
Colo. 55 in both directions from CO 138 to mile post 5.5.
Colo. 59 in both directions from I-76 to Yuma.
Colo. 61 in both directions from Otis to Sterling.
Colo. 71 in both directions from Last Chance to Brush.
Colo. 86 in both directions from Elizabeth to I-70.
Colo. 113 in both directions from CO 138 to Nebraska.
