Gauff, Kyrgios knocked out in last eight


Highly-rated teenager Coco Gauff saw her run at the 2022 US Open come to an abrupt end as she lost in the quarterfinals. The 18-year-old was uncharacteristically nervous for most of her tie against French player Caroline Garcia, allowing the older player to claim a 6-3 6-4 straight sets win and proceed to her first-ever semifinals in a Grand Slam.

Ons Jabeur continued her fine form to reach the last four at Flushing Meadows after overcoming Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets. The fifth seed Tunisian picked up a 6-4 7-6 win over her opponent in their clash.

Aryna Sabalenka needed to do it the hard way against Danielle Collins as she booked her place in the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open. The Belarusian star lost the first set before recovering to win 3-6 6-3 6-2 in front of a partisan crowd in New York.

Karen Khachanov stunned in-form Nick Kyrgios to reach the semifinals of the US Open after a keenly-contested encounter. Khachanov reached his first semifinal in the US Open as the field looks open for the first time in years. The Russian claimed a 7-5 4-6 7-5 6-7 6-4 win over his Australian opponent in their encounter. He will now face 5th seed Casper Ruud for a place in the final.

2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic pushed 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz Garfia to his limits before the teenage Spaniard defeated him in five sets to book his place in the last eight in New York. Alcaraz won the match against his Croatian opponent 6-4 3-6 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Casper Ruud became the first man from Norway to reach a Grand Slam semifinal after he overcame Matteo Berrettini in their quarterfinal meeting at Flushing Meadows. The fifth seed wasted no time in picking up a straight sets win over 13th seeded Berrettini. Ruud won the match 6-1 6-4 7-6 to progress.

Elsewhere, Jannik Sinner defeated Ilya Ivashka in five sets to reach the quarterfinals in New York. The young Italian won the match 6-1 5-7 6-2 4-6 6-3 to secure a quarterfinal encounter with Carlos Alcaraz Garfia.
