It’s not every day a head coaching candidate in the NFL talks openly about the process.
It’s also not every day an NFL head coaching candidate has a job on Fox.
Sean Payton, the former Saints head coach, said Sunday morning during Fox’s pregame show that he’s been in contact with Broncos brass, presumably CEO Greg Penner, after Denver got permission Saturday from New Orleans to speak with him about the vacant head coaching position here.
“Denver’s the first team (to reach out) and I was able to have a conversation with their owner and that’s kind of the protocol,” Payton said. “It would go team to Saints and then the interview process can’t officially begin until the 17th of this month. That’s kind of where it’s at.”
Payton has two years left on his contract, meaning a team would have to essentially trade the Saints for his rights. He said that conversation would happen further into the process.
Payton said there isn’t a job out there that he’d categorically rule himself out of, including within the Saints division, and outlined what’s important to him. Fox analyst Pete Schrager asked, using Russell Wilson as an example, if a team’s quarterback situation is a driving factor in what makes a job attractive.
“It’s really about the triangular relationship — ownership, front office, head coach,” Payton said. “When we went to New Orleans, and I we because there were a lot of people involved, the quarterback was unsettled at that time. I think ownership and the functionality of the front office is most important.”
