A driver involved in a fatal wrong-way crash on Interstate 70 in Wheat Ridge over the Thanksgiving weekend has been charged with vehicular homicide.

Jonathan Alberto Lozoya Caldera, 29, of Arvada, is also charged with three counts of vehicular assault, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, driving on the wrong side of a divided highway, and driving under restraint, according to a Wheat Ridge Police Department news release.

A 53-year-old driver was killed and three passengers, all from the same family, were seriously injured in the Nov. 26 crash, police said. Some members of the family were visiting Colorado from Iowa.

Caldera, driving a black pickup truck, was heading west in the eastbound lanes when the crash happened near Kipling Street. He suffered serious injuries in the crash and remains hospitalized, police said.

Police presented the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office this week, according to the release, and formal charges have been filed.
