The Colorado School of Mines football team will not be sharing the RMAC title this time around.
Riding yet another explosive performance from quarterback John Matocha, the Orediggers routed New Mexico Highlands 54-16 in Las Vegas, N.M., on Saturday to lock up the outright conference championship.
Mines has won or shared the last four RMAC titles, and the Orediggers (8-2, 8-0 RMAC) will get to keep this one all to themselves after winning eight straight conference games following an 0-2 start to the season.
Matocha threw a career-high five touchdown passes — four of which came during a 34-6 first half for the Orediggers. The senior finished with 369 yards on 23-of-34 passing with zero interceptions and just one sack.
Holy Family High alum Michael Zeman churned out 109 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while Mountain Vista alum Tristan Smith had four grabs for 99 yards and two scores and Max McLeod hauled in nine balls for 93 yards and a TD.
The Mines defense got a few points of its own, with Mack Minnehan recovering a fumble in the end zone and inside linebacker Adrian Moreno collecting a career-high 20 tackles.
All told, Mines outgained the Cowboys (3-6, 3-5 RMAC) 564 yards to 262, with a 28-13 edge in first downs. The run-heavy New Mexico Highlands attack had 216 yards on the ground, but it took them 43 carries to do it, and their second touchdown of the game came with less than four minutes to go.
Mines will close out its regular-season schedule next Saturday with a home game against Fort Lewis at noon.
