The Chicago White Sox announced the remainder of their 2023 coaching staff under new manager Pedro Grifol, including a new hitting coach in José Castro.
Chris Johnson is the team’s new assistant hitting coach and Eddie Rodríguez is the third base coach.
Mike Tosar is the team’s major league field coordinator and Geoff Head is the senior director of sports performance.
And Darryl Boston returns as the first base coach.
The Sox previously announced Charlie Montoyo as the bench coach, with Ethan Katz and Curt Hasler returning in their respective roles as the pitching and bullpen coaches.
Castro, 64, will be a first-year hitting coach in the majors after spending the last eight years as the assistant hitting coach with the Atlanta Braves. His major-league coaching experience includes time with the Braves (2015-22) and Chicago Cubs (2014 as quality assurance coach). He was the interim hitting coach with the Seattle Mariners in 2008.
Johnson, 38, is elevated to the big-league staff after spending the last two seasons as the hitting coach for the Sox’s Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte.
Rodríguez, 63, and Tosar, 54, spent time with the Kansas City Royals organization, like Grifol.
Rodríguez was the Royals’ minor-league field coordinator for three seasons (2020-22). His coaching experience includes serving as the Royals third base coach (2011-13), Seattle’s first base coach (2008), the bench coach in Montreal (2004) and Washington (2005-06), Arizona’s third base coach (2002-03) and first base coach (2001), and Toronto’s third-base coach (1998).
Tosar spent the last three seasons (2020-22) as a special assignment hitting coach in the Kansas City organization.
Boston, 59, will be in his 11th season as first base coach and 26th as a coach with the Sox.
Head, 37, was the senior director of health and performance with the Cincinnati Reds for three seasons (2020-22). He previously spent 12 seasons in the San Francisco organization as strength and conditioning coordinator (2008-2015), major-league sports scientist (2015-2017) and assistant director of player development/director of sports medicine (2017-2019).
