Ejiro Evero is a popular coaching candidate this month. And while he’s already completed two head coaching interviews and has another scheduled with Houston next week, the Broncos are not going to let him interview for lateral positions at this point.
Denver denied a request from the Atlanta Falcons to interview Evero for their defensive coordinator position on Friday, multiple sources confirmed to The Post.
Evero, the first-year Denver defensive coordinator, remains under contract with the Broncos for next season, so they’re allowed to deny him the opportunity to interview for any job not considered a promotion. Since Evero called plays and coordinated Denver’s defense in 2022, that means they can block anything but head coaching interviews.
Evero, 42, will interview for at least Denver, Indianapolis and the Texans’ head coaching jobs.
Of course, much of the attention for the Broncos currently is on who will ultimately get the head coaching job. If Evero doesn’t, one of the most interesting cascading decisions will be whether the next head coach wants to keep Evero as the coordinator and, if so, if Evero is on board with that or if he’d prefer to be let out of his contract and explore his options elsewhere.
The sticking point, naturally, is that Denver doesn’t have to let him explore other options unless they’re of the head coaching variety.
