Denver’s district attorney on Tuesday charged a 19-year-old with first-degree murder after he allegedly struck and killed a man with his car while going 70 mph over the speed limit earlier this month.
Prosecutors also charged Avel Aguirre-Sanchez with eight additional felonies, including attempted murder and first-degree assault, the DA’s office said in a news release.
The charges come less than two weeks after police say Aguirre-Sanchez struck and killed 23-year-old Terrell Jones, a pedestrian, near Broadway and Irvington Street.
Witnesses told police that on July 2 the driver was going more than 100 mph in a 30-mph zone when he struck Jones as he walked across Broadway.
Aguirre-Sanchez is set to appear in court Thursday, where he will be advised of his charges.
