Aruna Quadri leads Team Nigeria to dominant start in Table Tennis

The 2022 Commonwealth Games served off with Team Nigeria in action in the men’s and women’s table tennis competition.

To start the day, Offiong Edem led the Nigerian ladies to a 3-0 win over St Vincent and the Grenadines in the women’s team Group 1 match with two singles wins and a doubles win. First, Bello Fatimo and Offiong Edem defeated Unica Velox and Leah Cumberbatch 3-0 (11-6; 11-2; 11-5). Afterwards, Esther Oribamise defeated Shanecia Delpesche 3-0 (11-2; 11-3; 11-2). To complete the rout, Edem defeated Leah Cumberbatch 3-0 (11-1; 11-2; 11-3) to secure the opening win.

Not to be outdone by the women, Aruna Quadri led the men’s team to a 3-0 win over South Africa in their men’s team Group 2 match with two singles wins and a doubles win. First, Olajide Omotayo and Amadi Omeh defeated the duo of Theo Cogill and Chetan Nathoo 3-0 (11-5; 11-5; 11-5). In the singles events, Quadri defeated Shaun Jones 3-0 (11-6; 11-3; 12-10) and Omotayo overcame Nathoo 3-0 (11-9; 11-6; 11-6).

The Nigerian ladies fell to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of their Singaporean counterparts in their second Group 1 match, losing all of their singles and doubles matches against their Asian opposition.

The men, on the other hand, picked up another impressive 3-0 win over their Ghanaian counterparts to put them in a commanding position in Group 2. In the doubles, Amadi Omeh partnered Aruna Quadri to pick up a 3-0 (11-7; 11-3; 11-9) win over Emmanuel Commey and Derek Abrefa. Quadri went on to defeat Emmanuel Asante 3-0 (11-3; 11-3; 11-6) in the singles, before Olajide Omotayo completed the match with a 3-0 (11-8; 11-7; 11-8) win over Abrefa.
