The police shooting happened at about 8:25 p.m. Saturday at an apartment in the 7000 block of Pecos Street, said Sgt. Adam Sherman, a sheriff’s office spokesman.
When deputies arrived at the apartment, they knocked on the door and a man, holding a knife, opened the door, and then quickly slammed it shut, Sherman said. The two deputies heard a woman screaming from inside the residence and they entered the apartment.
“The man was holding a knife to a woman’s neck,” Sherman said. Deputies gave commands for the suspect to drop the knife. He didn’t comply and pulled the woman’s hair, pressing the knife against her throat.
The deputies fired, striking the suspect who was pronounced dead at the scene, Sherman said. The woman was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and underwent surgery.
Both deputies have been placed on leave, per office policy, pending the outcome of an ongoing police shooting investigation. The man who was shot dead will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
